PITTSBURGH (September 29, 2024) – In true Pittsburgh spirit, more than 8,000 determined runners and walkers conquered soggy conditions today to cross the finish line at the 47th Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race presented by Highmark. As Pennsylvania’s largest 10K, this iconic race attracted participants from 38 states and Washington D.C., further cementing its status as one of the region’s most celebrated fall traditions.

"The spirit and determination of Pittsburgh’s running community were on full display today," said Brian Katze, race director for the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race. "Despite the rain, more than 8,000 runners crossed the finish line, proving that nothing can dampen the excitement of this beloved tradition. We’re proud to see such incredible participation from across the country and grateful for the continued support of the Richard S. Caliguiri Amyloidosis Fund."

Nick Wolk, Pittsburgh native and local running legend, clinched his fourth consecutive Great Race 10K title with a commanding time of 31:52. Meanwhile, Jennifer Bigham, also from Pittsburgh, extended her reign as the 10K women’s champion, winning for the sixth time with an impressive finish of 35:22. Bigham’s previous victories came in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023, solidifying her as a hometown hero.

In the 5K race, Michael Downey of Pittsburgh claimed first place with a blazing time of 15:21. Jennifer Gerland, another Pittsburgh local, earned top honors in the women’s 5K with a strong finish of 18:04.

Highlighting the day’s accomplishments, over 250 runners completed the One Great Challenge, finishing both the 5K and 10K races and earning an extra medal for their achievement. Additionally, 18 men known as the “Perfect Great Racers” proudly crossed the 10K finish line for the 47th consecutive year, showcasing their enduring commitment to this storied race.

Racing for a Cause

Beyond the thrill of competition, the Great Race also raises awareness for a vital cause. For each registration to the Great Race and Dollar Bank Junior Great Race, $1 is donated to the Richard S. Caliguiri Amyloidosis Fund, which supports critical medical research on amyloidosis—a rare protein disorder. The fund is held by the Pittsburgh Foundation, continuing the legacy of Mayor Caliguiri, who passed away from the disease.
